The Data Protection Officer (DPO) facilitates scientific research by providing information and advice on data protection legislation and regulations.
UZ Gent and UGent each have their own DPO:
- The DPO at UZ Gent is the point of contact for personal data relating to patient care, research involving UZ Gent patient data, and the personal data of UZ Gent staff.
- The DPO at UGent is the point of contact for research at the university that does not involve UZ Gent patient data, and for the personal data of UGent staff and students.

- Monitoring compliance with data protection regulations
- Acting as a point of contact for patients, students, staff and external parties regarding data protection
- Acting as a point of contact for, and liaising with, the data protection authority
